Limelight Privacy Notice

Lutron respects your privacy and provides you with control of your personal data. This Privacy Notice is intended to assist you in making informed decisions when using the Limelight software (the "Software"). Please take a moment to read and understand it.

Lutron is committed to the security and privacy of our customers’ information.

We design with security and privacy in mind.

The information we gather is used to enhance the Lutron brand experience for the customer.

We are transparent about the information we collect and how we use it.

This Privacy Notice explains the information we collect and how we use that data. The primary purpose of collecting data is to provide you with the functionality to control and monitor your Limelight lighting control system. For the Software to function you must also purchase a Limelight lighting control system comprising of Limelight gateway and control devices.

  1. System setup and configuration data

    The primary use of the Limelight system is in commercial facilities. Primary users of the Limelight software are likely to be a) the installing electrical contractor and b) the facility manager(s).

    When a Limelight system is designed and commissioned, many details are entered into the system configuration in order to ensure that the system operates according to your specifications. These configuration parameters are entered using the Limelight design software and transferred into the lighting system hardware that is installed at your facility.

    Lutron uses this System setup and configuration data for the following purposes:

    1. To maintain a backup copy of your system’s configuration, in order to provide you with service in the event that your system becomes corrupted or is otherwise compromised and cannot be recovered through your own efforts.

    2. To make informed business decisions about how customers are using our systems and features.

    3. To be able to quote upgrades or other service you may contact us about.

    4. If you have purchased a Software Maintenance Agreement (“SMA”) from us, we may use a backup copy of your system’s configuration to verify any features you are using for which an update exists.

    Who do we share your personal information with for these purposes?

    We share your personal information with third party providers that assist us with maintaining the project information and backups of the configuration data.

    The following is required to be provided to European Union (“EU”) users: The legal basis for use of your personal information is to perform our obligations in accordance with any contract that we may have with you.In this case, it is to ensure the system operates according to your specifications.

  2. System alert information, including history of alerts

    After a Limelight system is designed and commissioned, there are many alerts generated by the lighting control system. This information can be used by a facility manger to monitor the health of their lighting control and perform the necessary tasks to mitigate the issues. A history of these alerts and when they were “cleared” live in the Limelight Software.

    Lutron uses this alert and historical alert data for the following purposes:

    1. To maintain a backup copy of the alerts, in order to provide you with service if your system becomes corrupted or is otherwise compromised and cannot be recovered through your own efforts.

    2. To be able to quickly assess system issues and provide solutions to improve/fix your lighting control system during a service visit.

    The following is required to be provided to European Union (“EU”) users: The legal basis for use of your personal information is to perform our obligations in accordance with any contract that we may have with you. In this case, it is to monitor the lighting system.

  3. Historical system activity data (including energy, power, occupancy, and system event data)

    After a Limelight system is designed and commissioned, there are many system activities generated by the lighting control system. The system activity data includes energy, power, occupancy, and system event data. The energy/power data can be used by a facility manager to monitor the energy usage and allow them to tweak their system to be more energy efficient. Occupancy data can be used by the facility manager to monitor usage of the spaces in their buildings and determine ways to better utilize their spaces. System activity data includes events like keypad presses, time clock event activity and user interaction with the system; this data can be used by the facility manager to determine how the lighting control system is being used.

    Lutron uses this system activity data for the following purposes:

    1. To maintain a backup copy of the alerts, in order to provide you with service in the event that your system becomes corrupted or is otherwise compromised and cannot be recovered through your own efforts.

    2. To be able to quickly assess system issues and provide solutions to improve/fix your lighting control system during a service visit.

    The following is required to be provided to European Union (“EU”) users: The legal basis for use of your personal information is to perform our obligations in accordance with any contract that we may have with you. In this case, it is to provide you access to monitor energy usage data from the building.

  4. Configuration reports that show how the system is currently configured

    After a Limelight system is designed and commissioned, the software can generate reports that show how the system is currently configured. These reports can be used by the facility manager to review and confirm their system is configured as they desire it.

    Lutron uses this data for the following purposes:

    1. To be able to quickly assess system issues and provide solutions to improve/fix your lighting control system during a service visit.

    The following is required to be provided to European Union (“EU”) users: The legal basis for use of your personal information is to perform our obligations in accordance with any contract that we may have with you. In this case, it is to generate system reports on the Software.

  5. Information for BACnet integration that you may request

    When available, the Limelight lighting control system can be integrated to a BACnet system, at the customer’s request. The integration requires items in the lighting control system to be assigned integration IDs. These integration IDs are used by the BACnet system to request information from and send updated values to the system components that have been assigned IDs.

    Lutron uses this data for the following purposes (at your request):

    1. To share this data with BACnet integrators, so they can configure the BACnet system to work with the Limelight lighting control system.

    2. To be able to quickly assess BACnet integration issues and provide solutions to improve/fix your lighting control system’s BACnet integration during a service visit.

    The following is required to be provided to European Union (“EU”) users: The legal basis for use of your personal information is to perform our obligations in accordance with any contract that we may have with you. In this case, it is to provide information generated from your system integration to a BACnet system.

  6. Information for other desired third-party integrations that you may request

    When available, the Limelight lighting control system can be integrated with third party systems, at the customer’s request. This integration may require the lighting control system to store the integration information such as connection info and credentials to communicate to the third-party system. The integration may also require the third-party system to have connection information and credentials to communicate to the Limelight system.

    Lutron uses this data for the following purposes (at your request):

    1. To share Limelight integration data with 3rd parties, so those parties can complete their integration with the Limelight lighting control system.

    2. To use the third-party integration data, so the Limelight lighting control system can properly integrate with the third parties.

    3. To be able to quickly assess third party integration issues and provide solutions to improve/fix your lighting control system’s third-party integration during a service visit.

    Lutron provides this information to third parties that have been requested/approved by the customer. Lutron does not sell this information.

    The following is required to be provided to European Union (“EU”) users: The legal basis for use of your personal information is to perform our obligations in accordance with any contract that we may have with you. In this case, it is to ensure we can integrate your system with other third-party systems (at your request).

  7. Troubleshooting and support data

    After a Limelight system is designed and commissioned, there are support files and troubleshooting information that are generated by the lighting controls.

    Lutron uses this data for the following purposes:

    1. To be able to quickly assess system issues and provide solutions to improve/fix your lighting control system during service visit.

    2. To provide troubleshooting information to Lutron engineers to further assess the system issues and provide solutions to improve/fix your lighting control system during the next service visit.

    The following is required to be provided to European Union (“EU”) users: The legal basis for use of your personal information is to perform our obligations in accordance with any contract that we may have with you, in this case to respond to your request for assistance.

For security reasons, we will need to verify that the person initiating a data request is authorized. For privacy inquiries, generally we will verify you by confirming at least two (2) pieces of your provided personal information with information maintained by Lutron. Depending on the nature of your request we may need to implement heightened processes to verify your identity. Should you use an authorized agent to initiate a data request on your behalf, you will need to coordinate the sending of the required account verification information to us with your authorized agent.

Again, please be sure to include the nature of your request. You will not receive a differing level of service if you initiate a data request; initiating a request will not impact the operation of your Limelight system.

If you request erasure of required operational data, certain functionality provided by the Limelight software may be lost, such as backups of your Limelight system programming.

How long do we keep your personal information & how do we protect it?

Your personal data that is retained (i) either on your internal server(s) on your premises or (ii) on our servers in the US when such data is manually relayed by a field technician. Provided you continue to use the Limelight software, we retain your personal data only for as long as is necessary for our relationship with you, in accordance with our retention policies and in accordance with applicable laws. If your information is only useful or needed for a short period, we may delete it.

Lutron takes security very seriously and we follow industry best-practices around securing data, monitoring for potential abuse, and updating systems. We do not collect more personal data than we need to fulfil our purposes stated in this Privacy Notice and we will not retain it for longer than is necessary.

We are required to advise residents of California that they may request the following

  • A copy of your personal information collected by Lutron
  • Deletion of your personal information;
  • Opt-out of the sale of personal information;
  • Correction of inaccurate personal information;
  • Limit the use and disclosure of sensitive personal information. 

The following is required to be provided to EU users regarding Data access and rights:

You have the following rights in relation to the personal information we hold about you:

  1. Your right of access. If you ask us, we’ll confirm whether we’re processing your personal information and, if so, provide you with a copy of that personal information (along with certain other details).

  2. Your right to rectification. If the personal information we hold about you is inaccurate or incomplete, you’re entitled to have it rectified. If we’ve shared your personal information with others, we’ll let them know about the rectification where possible. If you ask us, where possible and lawful to do so, we’ll also tell you who we’ve shared your personal information with so that you can contact them directly.

  3. Your right to erasure. You can ask us to delete or remove your personal information in some circumstances such as where we no longer need it or if you withdraw your consent (where applicable). If we’ve shared your personal information with others, we’ll let them know about the erasure where possible. If you ask us, where it is possible and lawful for us to do so, we’ll also tell you who we’ve shared your personal information with so that you can contact them directly. Upon deleting your personal information, backups of personal information may linger for a bit with us before they are deleted. Also, we may need to retain certain data if required to do so for legal reasons. To remove the possibility of further data being sent to us, you should stop scheduling service calls for your lighting control system (system information is never automatically sent to Lutron by the lighting control system.

  4. Your right to restrict processing. You can ask us to ‘block’ or suppress the processing of your personal information in certain circumstances such as where you contest the accuracy of that personal information or you object to us processing it. It won’t stop us from storing your personal information though. We’ll tell you before we lift any restriction. If we’ve shared your personal information with others, we’ll let them know about the restriction where it is possible for us to do so. If you ask us, where it is possible and lawful for us to do so, we’ll also tell you who we’ve shared your personal information with so that you can contact them directly.

  5. Your right to data portability. You have the right, in certain circumstances, to obtain personal information you’ve provided us with (in a structured, commonly used and machine-readable format) and to reuse it elsewhere or to ask us to transfer this to a third party of your choice. We will provide the information in a common industry format to you via email upon your request.

  6. Your right to object. You can ask us to stop processing your personal information, and we will do so, if we are:

    1. relying on our own or someone else’s legitimate interests to process your personal information, except if we can demonstrate compelling legal grounds for the processing;
      or
    2. processing your personal information for direct marketing.

  7. Your rights in relation to automated decision-making and profiling. You have the right not to be subject to a decision when it’s based on automatic processing, including profiling, if it produces a legal effect or similarly significantly affects you, unless such profiling is necessary for entering into, or the performance of, a contract between you and us.

  8. Your right to withdraw consent. If we rely on your consent (or explicit consent) as our legal basis for processing your personal information, you have the right to withdraw that consent at any time.

  9. Your right to lodge a complaint with the supervisory authority. If you have a concern about any aspect of our privacy practices, including the way we’ve handled your personal information, EU users can report it to the data protection authority within your country.

International transfers of personal data

Some of our group entities and service providers are in the United States or India. We may share information with such parties, and with a contractor located in India, for select technical issues.

The following is required to be provided to EU users: When we transfer personal data from the EU to the United States and India, we use contractual clauses process approved by the European Commission. Such a transfer may also be necessary in order to perform a contract with you/fulfil your request and/or through obtaining your explicit consent.
